Tradesmen have rushed onto a busy street to try and stop a rampaging ute driver who slammed into several cars and almost ran down a pedestrian.

The shocking early morning road rage incident in Newcastle, New South Wales, was filmed by a bystander who captured the dramatic scene as it unfolded.

The white utility can be seen spinning its tires near a yellow hatchback at the start of the video posted to Facebook, before it takes off and narrowly misses a man who leaps out of the way.

Tradies working across the road on Hunter Street can be heard gasping in surprise as an ambulance with its lights on moves in to block the ute.

But the driver reverses and flees the scene before getting stuck at a busy traffic light intersection just a few metres ahead.

‘Get his plates!’ One worker can be heard saying in the video, before about a dozen tradesman in hi-vis gear surround the vehicle which had now come to a stop.

‘Get out of the car!’ They scream at the driver.

But the out-of-control motorist once again reverses and tries to speed off.

It then collides with a car in front and spins its tires trying to get through a narrow gap.

The tradies continue their attempt to intervene and can be heard discussing whether to try and smash the window of the rampaging car.

As the ute eventually makes its way through the red light, it crashes into another vehicle before speeding off.

Newcastle City Police District said they were called to the scene at about 6:20am on Friday and located the ute nearby a short time later.

‘Following inquiries, police attended King Street, Newcastle, and arrested a 29-year-old woman about 9.15am,’ police said.

‘She has been taken to Newcastle Police Station.’

The ute has now been seized for forensic examination and the 55-year-old pedestrian who sustained minor injuries to his arm was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.

No one else was injured during the incident.
