A mum has been slammed online after asking when it’s appropriate to charge her own kids rent – and how much they should have to cough up to live under her roof.

The Australian woman said her two young children, aged 15 and 16, are at school but are also looking for part-time jobs.

‘When do you think it’s okay to start charging rent or board and at what percentage of their income should it be?’ the curious woman asked.

But her seemingly innocent question divided the internet – with dozens of parents furious at her for considering charging her own children.

‘They are your kids not your source of income,’ one woman said angrily.

‘They are your kids for crying out loud,’ one father said, outraged.

‘Personally my kids will never pay to live at home no matter their age, however I would be encouraging them to save a percentage of what income they do receive so they are set up and in the habit of doing it,’ another said.

‘I wouldn’t even consider charging a minor for room/board. That is your responsibility as a parent to house and feed your children,’ and one added.

Others supported the idea and said it was important for kids to learn how to be responsible before they start paying for bills and budgeting.

‘I don’t think we teach our children anything by not charging them board. Paying their way is teaching them life skills,’ one mum said.

‘When my boys started earning at 16 I sat down with them showed them the house expenses – food, power, gas and internet – divided it by the amount of people in the house and basically said this is what you cost a week,’ she added.

She said she didn’t expect that amount to be paid but they needed to contribute.

Another woman said she started paying her parents $50 per week once she finished school.

‘I’m glad my parents made me pay board. It taught me to budget and to be smart with my money,’ she said.

‘My daughter was made to start on her 16th birthday. We charge $25 a week… I pay for her needs within our home and she pays for her wants,’ one mum said.

One mum claimed her friend’s son has excelled after being made to pay board.

‘A family friend charged his children a quarter of their wages the moment they started work as long as they saved a quarter of their weekly wage as well,’ she said.

Others defended the mum and said not enough was known about the family’s financial situation to make a judgement call – as they could be on a very low income.

‘The blind privilege in some of the comments is mind blowing. I have never asked my teens to contribute but would if it meant keeping the household afloat,’ she said.
